Emergency Preparation

Being prepared can make a significant difference in an emergency. Use these checklists to ensure you’re ready.

Basic Emergency Kit

Every household should have these essential items ready:

Water and Food

  • Water: 3 litres per person per day for at least 3 days
  • Non-perishable food for at least 3 days
  • Manual can opener
  • Eating utensils

Safety and First Aid

  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight and extra batteries (AA/AAA), USB power banks (charged)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Whistle to signal for help

Documents and Communication

  • Copies of important documents in waterproof container
  • Mobile phone with chargers, cables and backup battery
  • Printed and laminated emergency contact list

Personal Items

  • Prescription medications (at least a week’s supply)
  • Glasses or contact lenses
  • Infant formula and nappies (if needed)
  • Pet food and supplies (if needed)

Tools

  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Local maps
  • Dust masks and plastic sheeting

Additional Recommendations

  • Cash in small notes
  • Change of clothes and sturdy shoes
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Sanitation supplies (garbage bags, wet wipes)
